Airborne Assault! American and German Airborne Operations
"These two films are as interesting in the contrast they provide between the way the US and German armies went to war -- and portrayed it -- as they are precious repositories of historic film footage." Zeno
*DZ Normandy: The D-Day Airborne Invasion of Fortress Europe 6/6/1944 {Restored) (1 hour & 25-minutes --1944, B&W) We used two versions of this film to produce the best possible composite restoration."DZ Normandy" was produced during the war to show the strategic and tactical planning that went into the airborne component of the June 6th, 1944 D-Day invasion as well as document the actual proceedings. Of special interest is the detailed depiction of the development of glider troop transport and doctrine. Great footage of 82nd & 101st Division paratroopers too. If you think you've seen all the surviving footage about Normandy operations, this film will be an eye opener. It was originally only shown to airborne troops as part of their training and was declassified after the end of the War.
*Sky Blitz (1942--B&W, 22:00) In German with English commentary. This documentary on the use of airborne troops during the invasion of Holland in May 1940 was captured from the Germans and turned into a training tool by the US Army Air Corp. That's because it's a text book case of the effective use of airborne troops. This dramatic, action filled film focuses on the capture and securing of one of of the strategic lynchpins in the defense of Holland, the massive Moerdijk bridge. You'll see crack "Fallschrimjeager" troops seize the bridge intact before it can be blown by the Dutch. Useful maps portray tactical operations.
